RKT Recipe

RKT is short for Rice Krispie Treats and it is great for modelling with and much cheaper and lighter than using modelling chocolate or modelling paste or even cake for unusual shapes and additions to cakes. I have the perfect recipe that I always use when making RKT and it’s so quick and easy to put together. I’ve even seen people use RKT for a tier on a two-tiered cake.

I find once RKT has been made up it lasts around 7 days so it also gives you the advantage of making that part of the cake earlier to allow yourself more time for other things on the day.

Here’s our recipe..

  • 200g Marshmallow
  • 50g of Butter
  • 150g of Rice Krispies

Yep.. Just three ingredients make it and it couldn’t be simpler as there’s no need to even turn the oven on!

1. Heat the butter in a pan, once melted add the marshmallows stirring continuously.

2. When the marshmallows are melted, turn off the heat and mix together to ensure they are fully blended.

3. Pour this mixture over your Rice Krispies, stir with a silicone spatula as it doesn’t stick as much.

Please be careful not to be tempted to use your hands until the mix has cooled, we are dealing with boiling hot sugar and it will burn so take precaution to leave it to cool for 10-15 mins before attempting to model with it.

Once cooled (15 mins) the mix will still be pliable to mould in to whichever shape you require… we used the Hulk Smash Hand in ours!


Top Tip

When you come to model with it, use a small amount of TREX White Vegetable fat on your hands, this will stop the mixture sticking to you, which can quickly get infuriating.

How To Get A Smooth Finish

Create a smooth finish by either crumb coating your RKT model with buttercream or for hotter seasons use Ganache which holds a little better. Once you’ve added a couple of layers it will smooth  any cracks and lumps on your sculpture and you can then cover it with sugarpaste roll out fondant.


Don’t chuck left overs away… with the leftovers simply flatten in to a square dish and cut up in to squares for your very own home made Rice Krispie Treats for the kids!

Other Uses

I have been known to make this just for snacks on a weekend hike, use the same recipe & add 30g of Protein Powder to it and make it in to bars for a full fuelled snack bar!
